Es Pontàs: The First Ascent
2007 · 7 min · Deep Water Solo
The image is one of climbing's most famous: Chris Sharma airborne over the Mediterranean, mid-dyno on the natural rock arch of Es Pontàs off the coast of Mallorca. This Reel Rock cut presents the historic first ascent footage from 2006-07, the ascent that defined deep water soloing for a generation.
No ropes, no pads, just a long swim back after every fall from the arch's wildly overhanging line. The dyno alone reportedly took Sharma dozens of attempts across multiple trips. Nearly two decades later the route saw few repeats, and this short remains the essential document of psicobloc at its purest.
