Alex Honnold Solos The Phoenix

In 2011, Alex Honnold free soloed The Phoenix, a dead-vertical, relentlessly pumpy 5.13a crack above Cascade Falls in Yosemite, and Reel Rock's cameras were there. It was the hardest free solo of its style in America at the time, and this behind-the-scenes cut shows both the ascent and the strange logistics of filming someone who cannot fall.

Unlike the polished arcs of later Honnold films, this one is raw and close: chalk, jams, wet rock at the lip of a waterfall, a crew trying to stay out of the way. As a document of the era when Honnold was redefining what soloing meant, years before El Cap, it's indispensable.
